This is the blog by the Student National Medical Association-Minority Association of Premedical Students (SNMA-MAPS). This blog should feature advice for students interested in healthcare, especially those who attend the University of Chicago.

This blog is run and written by members of the SNMA-MAPS association of the University of Chicago. SNMA-MAPS is a Student Run Minority Association of PreMedical Students and though this blog contains content relating to UChicago students, the information provided here is useful for any student interested in pursuing Medical Careers.

With this blog, we aim to provide support and resources to the PreMeds of the UofC by the following methods:

  • If you have participated in a summer program, completed a UofC course that might be interesting to other Pre-Meds, or have any article, news, etc. that you think would be useful on the site, go on this link and follow the instructions there. We are very excited to hear what you have done, and what advice you have to share.
  • If you have a question, you can email us at maps.uchicago.edu and you will be connected with an upperclassman who can answer your question
  • If a similar question has been asked several times, an article will be created and posted in the blog. Note, if you have a question, search the archives of the blog using the search bar, before emailing the address.
  • We will also have reviews about various summer programs, from students who participated in the programs, including information on applying and the experience itself.
  • There will be class reviews for various classes many PreMeds take (not the mandatory ones), so like Sosc classes, Bio classes, Psych classes, etc. {Please note that reviews will be for the classes themselves and the class content, and will not include any professor or section reviews. For those, simply visit the Course Evaluations website}
  • If there are any interesting articles online, they will be posted in the Important Links section.
  • Finally, there will be summaries of the Quarterly panels that SNMA-MAPS holds and those should also contain answers to various popular questions.

A couple of things to keep in mind to successfully use this blog:

Comments are a good way of getting more information on a topic, in addition to using the email address. When you post a comment, it has to be approved before it shows up on the website, so if you keep posting the same comment over and over again, it will mark your email address as spam, so be patient and comments will be approved within one day.

Please please remember the search bar because not all posts will be visible on the first page but you can use the search bar to find a topic you are interested in.

The purpose of the University of Chicago’s SNMA-MAPS chapter is to provide minority students with an organization that offers a variety of information necessary to pursue a career in healthcare. SNMA–MAPS membership is open to all who wish to make a difference in health and medical concerns of underserved populations. With this said, we seek not only to provide relevant information to pre-medical students regarding the medical school application process, but to also promote participation in community service activities in the under-served communities of Chicago. We believe in addressing issues of healthcare disparities with hopes to increase the number of successful minority applicants into the healthcare field. At the University of Chicago, SNMA–MAPS facilitates academic and social contact with various groups including: the undergraduate Pre-Medical Students Organization (PMSA), the UChicago Careers in Health Professions (UCIHP) office, the SNMA medical school chapter at The Pritzker School of Medicine, University and Chicagoland physicians, and other campus organizations that represent minority students. Through these expansive networks and participation in a number of regional and national conferences, we hope to provide students at the University of Chicago with information pertinent to becoming a healthcare professional.

If you have any questions, concerns, complaints etc. regarding this site, please use the comments box below and we will try to resolve the issues.
